Dachshund IS a Bird Dog

I have been trying to tell Spaatz that he's not a bird dog. Over and over I tell him "no birds", you are a Dachshund. You are a scent hound, you have a height challenge so you can keep your nose to the ground and find things that way. Well today he proved me wrong. Along with Miss Peachy they got themselves a house sparrow today. I'm not sure how it started, but the bird was just running away from them. They chased it all about the yard, flushed it out of the woodpile, then they caught it. Peachy brought it in the house, my husband tossed it back out after she dropped it . Then Spaatz finished it. So they proved that even a Dachshund can be a bird dog. It just goes to show- aim high, you never know what you can do.
Don't feel bad for the sparrow, they are a non-native, invasive species which is considered the worst event in the history of American ornithology was the introduction of the English Sparrow. I'm quoting here. We don't like them because they take over Bluebird nest boxes, and will even go in and peck the Bluebird's brains out. They're pretty nasty. So today the dogs performed a service.

Call Mike Rowe - Dachshund Has A Dirty Job

Miss Peachy has been getting a bit of air time lately, but that's only because she is quite a character. She was this frightened little dog when we got her, but she has found her inner Dachshund and she is the mighty hunter. In this video she demonstrates her absolute determination to find and voles that might be lurking in their subterranean lair. She is not going to let a little mud get in her way and is using her mouth as a shovel. I regret to report she didn't find any critters so all she ended up getting was a serious dousing with a hose.

Shave The Peach

Its getting rather warm here in NY so I decided to go ahead and "Shave the Peach" a little earlier than usual. Miss Peachy seems  get fuzzier every year, but we always give her the puppy cut when it gets warm. She tends to get warm going on walks (and she loves her walkies) so this helps. They're also saying its going to be a bad tick year so the shorter fur makes it so much easier to see them on her.So she's going to feel better all around. I do hope we do get somewhat of a Spring and not jump into Summer straight away, especially in March.

Walking with 5 Wienerdogs

This is a short little snippet taken from my smartphone. Walking with 5 Dachshunds is everything you might suppose it to be, chaotic, yet fun. There is a great trail we love to take the dogs on that is on a ridge that's perched above the Hudson River, has some awesome views. The dogs love it too, but for them its all about the smells. When we have just our three dogs we often let them off leash, but on this day my daughters Dachshunds are along so we figured it was better to keep them tethered.
