Drabble , and the Miss Peaches Update

Sometimes it seems like this is exactly what's going on at my house. Sandie in particular is guilty of this. I tell her no barking, reassure her that there is no one here or that it's Dad about to come in. They know the sound of his truck, It's a diesel. I know they hear him coming down the road before I do. They start barking early, then I realize they heard it a half mile a way.
Then the crazy thing is later, you can be calling them to come in over and over and they really do not seem to hear you. They look up finally as if to say "oh, did you say something?" "Let me just sniff this blade of grass for another minute and I'll be right with you." Good thing they're sweet and cute and loving and all that stuff or there might be a problem.
Miss Peaches is doing really well since her back surgery, she can be the champ of not listening, but she's not the biggest barker. Now the challenge is to keep her from doing too much now that she is feeling better. I have taken up sleeping on the floor so that she is safe. She has been sleeping with people since she was a pup and is not doing the crate thing at night. So I will get down to her level. The tough part is making the floor not feel like the floor.

Dachshund Owners- You Know the Drill

Drabble knows how dachshunds operate. If you are like me, you are all to familiar with this drill. While the mighty dachshund is surely an invaluable security system, they are a little hair trigger.
If you have more than one dachshund, then there may be an "instigator". In my case I have two of them. Foozy is a barking instigator from way back, anything, doesn't matter if it's a half mile away. If he can hear it, see it, or smell it, it is an intruder and the warning must be issued. Then there is Sandie, who isn't too sharp (although terribly sweet), she barks at everything, but then she won't stop.
Sandie- Marathon barker
I think the classic moment was a couple weeks ago. We have a little fenced in area in the back yard where they can hang out. I could hear them all barking, so I went to investigate, when I looked to see what was going on, they were all barking , but facing different sides of the fence. They weren't even barking at the same thing. They were all just barking at the world.

Drabble knows his dachshund- Wally

close to home
Naturally Wally got up early because we turned the clocks back. Well, it's been the same thing here too. Spaatz and Foozie especially. I find myself kinda awake too because we're used to the dogs eating and going out and back to bed. So I'm awake, and my bladder is full, and there's a dachshund standing on me adding to the pressure. I'm not waiting any longer, their tummy alarm went off and I gotta go.
Eventually we'll all adjust to the new time. It never ceases to amaze how accurate their tummy clocks are to the minute. Like the other day I was in the kitchen making a cheesecake and they were just watching and waiting. Then all of the sudden Miss Peach comes up to me and gives me the look, and sure enough, it's 5 o'clock on the nose. This happens all the time, a body clock accurate to the minute.

Drabble and Dr Watson

As the owner of 4 dachshunds currently I must admit I have experienced the same thing as the Drabbles here. The always popular, at the most inopportune moment, channel change by the dog paw. You really just have to make sure the remote is on a nearby table, no need to banish the dogs from the couch. This comic reminded me of my first dachshund Watson, a standard wirehair. To date, the best dog I ever had, the only one I ever picked from a litter. Most of the current pack are rescues. Love them all anyway,
Watson was a particularly friendly dachshund, and ready to do whatever you might have up your sleeve, but how the comic makes me think of him was, one day we were out and I was driving an older Mercedes with the controls all on the center console. I was stopping at a Wendy's for a quick lunch. Watson knew very well that a drive-thru might net him a little treat, whether we are at the bank or a fast food joint. So needless to say he was a little excited. That's when he decided to step over towards me, just as I pulled up to the window one of those big paws hit the down button for my window opening it a precisely the right time. It made me laugh, I said "thank you sir"and with that you will get a couple of fries for helping me. Not that he wouldn't get them anyway. This was the one time stepping on the button wasn't a bad thing.

Drabble and the Dachshund snout

The dachshund snout is a powerful tool, no doubt about that. The other important trait is the determination of those little guys. Never underestimate it. I usually don't, but one gets careless at times. I had to go out to the store, so I took the usual precautions to "dachshund-proof " the house. You know, closing doors to certain rooms, putting garbage cans up that might prove tempting. They never touch them when I'm around, but soon as I leave certain parties can't control themselves. I am their conscience, when I leave, dogs will play. So I left, thinking that all was secure, but I had forgotten about some Christmas cookies which I had left on the dinning room table. Most were in hard plastic containers, except the peanut butter ones were in a bag. OMG! the peanut butter cookies. I might as well have left a steak on the floor. Later on I hadn't realize they were missing until I wanted one, I asked my husband "did you take the peanut butter cookies?" He said he hadn't. He then discovered what was left of the bag the cookies had been in, shredded, not a crumb to be seen. I wasn't mad at them, I shouldn't leave such things on the table, and- very important, a chair pulled out enough for an agile little dog to jump up and pursue his quarry, the elusive chewy peanut butter cookie. Probably about 20 of them. What I really wish is that I had set up a camera to record the event. Who's idea was this? 3 out of the 4 dogs could jump up, although Spaatz is by far the best jumper. Then what happened? Was it a free for all? Did Peaches get any? She's not able to jump up like the others. Oh, to be a fly on the wall.
Did you ever see such innocent looking dogs?

Drabble Does a Doxie Right

Drabble

I love this comic because it so often catches the essence of the dachshunds I live with. I literally say "oopsie", and they come running because its the signal I dropped something. Occasionally, if they're sleeping and didn't hear me I might say it again so they can commence floor patrol. One thing I know is there is nothing even remotely edible on the floor, be it food or not.
