Dachshund Though the Snow!

Sandie-Poo
Isn't Sandie the sweetest little teddy bear of a dog ever? Here she is sporting a little snow on her tummy just waiting for a little rub down after she comes in from the cold. Not that Sandie minds the cold at all, because she really doesn't seem to care it at all. Miss Peachy either. The reason is obvious of course. It's that fur coat. Foozie, I have to hunt him down and toss him out. Really not looking to go out even though he at least has a shirt on. So when he rings the bell to go out, I know he's not kidding. Then he's quick to do what he has to and he's crying to come back in.

Spaatz, even though he is a "smoothie"always wants to go out. There might be a squirrel out there, and we just can't have that. It's his job to eliminate them from the yard. He refuses to wear a sweater, it feels so foreign to him, he stiffens up and is not himself until it's removed, even though he will shiver when he's out there.
Sitting by the heat vent

Then there's Sandie and Peaches, always up for the hunt. Single digits outside, really, they hadn't noticed. I have to coax them to come in. In fact one of Sandie's favorite things to do is roll around in the snow. Peachy has way too much dignity for that, but she's not above jamming her head into the snowbank. That has a purpose though, she smells a critter and is looking for it. They all have their own style. I'm looking forward to when I have to shave the girls and the boys are out in the yard basking in the sun. Can't wait, spring will be sweet this year.

Hounds of Awesomeness

Where ever I am
They are.
Kitchen , bathroom
even the car
Lifting my spirits if they might be down
The Hounds of Awesomeness
are always around.
Four little dachshunds
here, by my side
for sleep, a walk
especially a ride.
A comedy team
Therapists Supreme
Hunters of vermin
like you never seen.
Ready for action
or maybe a nap.
A biscuit, or cheese
sugar peas that snap.
Snausages, yogurt,
did I mention the cheese?
These dachshunds of mine
are easy to please.
Devoted, 'tis true
Vigilant little crew
Knock on my door,
They'll be barking at you.
They'll bark and bark,
seems they can't get enough
It's their job you see
to protect their people and stuff.
They may make you crazy.
They will make you laugh
The Hounds of Awesomeness
Sure are a gas.
The ever awesome...

Peachy likes to dig.

This is what happens when your dog likes to dig. She gets ANOTHER bath. Miss Peaches is a sweet doggie, but she can't shut down the dachshund instincts. It's okay, I'm prepared with a vinyl apron and dog shampoo. The laundry room sink is the best place to do it.
She knows it's coming. She was digging at the edge of the fence, in the garden. I wish I had a new plant handy because the hole was deep enough. That chipmunk was long gone. At least this time it was just the face and paws. Sometimes it's one or the other. Then other times it's has been the whole dog, caked on mud, stem to stern. A lot of rinsing just to get down to the dog.
In the end that's just Peachy, she's the only real digger in the group. Spaatz like's to hunt, Foozie would rather lay in the sun. Give him a call if you catch anything. Then there's Sandie who likes to hunt, sun and Roll! And we know what happens to dogs that like to roll............

Does Your Dachshund Do This?

That is "The Dachshund Faceplant". Out of my 4 dogs Spaatz is the only one who does it. Interestingly enough, Spaatz's sister Loreli, who is owned by my daughter does the same thing. I have also seen pictures of other dachshunds doing it. It kinda feels like they're trying to smother you because they take the side of their face and neck and press it right up against your mouth, sometimes covering your nose as well. With Spaatz it's like he tries to disarm you temporarily, then when you try to catch some air he swoops in to clean your nostrils for you. That's where I draw the line. Snuggle if you want, just no tongue up the nose. One other downside is you can't see the TV either which is usually where I am when he tries this maneuver.
Now just hold still Mommy

The Light at the End of the Dachshund

Foozie the golden boy
I'm happy to say there may be light at the end of winter. I can now see bear ground where the dachshund trails were dug around the yard and soon the doggies and I will be out for walkies again. It's been a tough one, not only has there been so much snow on the ground but, it's been stinkin cold. Foozie here, is known
to be quite the sun worshipper , here going to the lengths of getting up on the paper shredder to be in the only sunny spot in the room in the afternoon. He did step on the button a couple of times which didn't seem to alarm him, but he did end up knocking it over, sending paper shreds flying and finding himself straddling the overturned shredder bucket and the open desk drawer next to it. He needed a rescue at that point. All in a days work in the life of a dachshund.

Go, Little Sandie, Go!!

So at least the snow has melted and compacted down enough so that the dogs can run on top of it. Probably less than a foot in some areas. It was a good two to three feet high, and when your a dachshund that means when you run outside your only going as far as the trenches are dug. We did have quite a little habitrail system laid out for them, but it's not the same as having the whole backyard to stretch your legs out in. Little Sandie does love to run and roll around in the snow like some kind of polar bear.
But deep down she really is just another dachshund that loves to lay around in the best sunny spot in the house

And The Their Were Four

Miss Sandie joins the group
Stop the world I want to get off! Wow, this little video brought to you by my new phone makes one feel like there is either an earthquake going on or we're on a boat. It's not so bad that  the dogs a moving, but everything is moving. I'm sorry if you look away and everything is still moving.
Anyway, looks like Sandie is going to stay, I won't be changing the name of the blog, but she will be featured regular as Spaatz, Foozeball and Miss Peaches are. She has several things going for her. First, she is a wire hair, which I find unbearably cute. She's actually half long hair, so the fur on her ears and tail are extra long. That's cool. She listens really well, which for a dachshund is great. In less than a week she is able to do things that Rango (another dachshund we fostered) couldn't do after 2 months. I just see a lot of potential with her. I think she will be an awesome addition to the pack, she's a happy, fun lovin dog.

What a face!

Foozie and The Cone of Shame

Good 'ole Foozie B. Its been established that he is neurotic about licking. That's why he wears a shirt all the time. He will lick his armpits until they are completely devoid of fur. Well, recently he got a boo boo on his toe and he decided to lick it so it would be an even bigger boo boo. So naturally we cleaned it up and wrapped it so it would get better. Foozie decided that he would lick his foot above the bandage so now he has two boo boo's. Enter the Cone of Shame. Couldn't just leave it alone could ya? I feel bad, because he's obviously not happy, but in a way one can't help but laugh because he looks funny. Then you feel bad again, because your finding humor in his discomfort. We are hoping we can get him to heal up enough so he doesn't have to wear the Cone of Shame for the rest of his life.

Dachshund Tries to Attack the Moon

Good ole Spaatz, not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I gotta give him credit for trying. Last night I was letting the dogs out the back door, which lets out into a big open field. It's mowed short close to the house, then eventually it gets into taller grass then woods. Well he leads the charge, all three flat out running, barking, I can almost here a bugle playing. I then realize what they're going for. It's not a varmint of any sort. It's the Moon. It's this giant glowing saucer just appearing over the horizon. One thing dachshunds don't like is things that are out of place. That moon is not there all the time so it was deemed a threat to the homestead and treated accordingly. They got way out there until the grass was getting too tall for dachshunds to pass through easily. At that point he decided he had bitten off more than he could chew and Spaatz called the patrol off. Figured there was plenty to sniff on the way back, it would be several minutes before they mosyed back to the house.

I Thought They were Dachshunds But,.....

It turns out that they are North American Cheesehounds. Their noses can hone in on all types of cheese from great distances. They can hear the crinkle sound of a package containing cheese from at least 2 rooms away. Their long low bodies are perfect for getting to any cheesy morsel that may have gotten out of the range of any larger breed. They also come equipped standard with extremely cute faces that renders their owner defenseless so they will relinquish the cheese without a struggle. It is unwise to look at the photo too long, you may find yourself running to the kitchen to find some cheddar to give to the nearest lowrider dog.

FOOZEBALL ROCKS HIS FOOTBALL SWEATER

Foozeball has the curse of being very handsome. Not a thing he can do about it, he's just a good lookin dude. He is a dog that can really rock a sweater or polo shirt. I got him this little sweater and it goes so well with his copper color. He is a dog that tends to look naked when he's not dressed. He will lick his armpits until there is no fur there, so I found keeping him in a shirt solves that problem. So he wears the sweaters this time of year, he's cool with it, and warm with the New York winter.

Who needs a cat? I've got Foozeball

Der Schnozzen- getting his beauty rest
When I was a kid I had a cat and a dog. Now I am strictly a dog person, just dachshunds in fact. One thing I remember about having a cat was how they rub their bodies against your legs. Well Foozie here is happy to provide this service completely free. Every time he does it it flashes me back to my cat Sam, who was actually about 4 pounds larger than Fooze. I don't miss having a cat, having 3 lap dogs with one that actually acts a little like a cat is all one could need.

Foozie out for a late season ride

It is November everywhere of course, and in NY that means its getting consistently chilly. The other day though it was nearly 60 degrees, so my husband got the bike out for a little ride. Foozie was so excited, spinning around in circles like he does when its suppertime. Now mind you he hasn't actually gone before because we don't have a custom dachshund seat with a helmet and goggles, but he was making such a big deal about it. I suggested he put the jacket on and stuff him inside. This worked for Fooze, and he went for a little ride and even a pit stop for gas. He was very happy. Here are the boys together.

Raining in NY again, so I made them a nest

Well, we have been caught in a weather pattern for sometime here in the Empire State. The dogs are even thinking "why even get up?" So they had hunkered down on the bed, so I figured I'd make them real comfy, and make a nest around them with one of their favorite crocheted blankets. They really seemed to enjoy it and stayed there for quite a while. Ordinarily they are sitting in the sunshine watching the birds and hoping a squirrel might happen by. Unfortunately we are forecast a nasty storm ala hurricane Sandy. The dogs might be hanging out in the nest so much they're gonna feel like birds.
No nest
Like bugs in a rug. All 3 are here.

Foozeball a Derpy Dachshund?

They might have been thinking of Fooze when they conjured up the word. I mean, if you manage to get the name Foozeball instead of Oscar or Frank there is definitely something up. The guy is a nut, but look at that face. Sweet, if somewhat demented. One of the things I love about this guy is that when the evening comes and we're watchin a little TV, and the dogs are sacked out on me, Foozie will let me pat him and pretty much do anything to him. He just keeps on sleeping. In the photo I have him sitting up in whatever position, pose him, stroke his handsome face. He just sleeps. Peaches wants to left alone if she wants to sleep, Spaatz has to be under a blanket, even in summer. If I'm watching something real exciting I will find myself patting Fooze and playing with his ears A LOT. It's all good, he doesn't care, he just keeps zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
A little cranium scratching is good.
