Hounds of Awesomeness

Where ever I am
They are.
Kitchen , bathroom
even the car
Lifting my spirits if they might be down
The Hounds of Awesomeness
are always around.
Four little dachshunds
here, by my side
for sleep, a walk
especially a ride.
A comedy team
Therapists Supreme
Hunters of vermin
like you never seen.
Ready for action
or maybe a nap.
A biscuit, or cheese
sugar peas that snap.
Snausages, yogurt,
did I mention the cheese?
These dachshunds of mine
are easy to please.
Devoted, 'tis true
Vigilant little crew
Knock on my door,
They'll be barking at you.
They'll bark and bark,
seems they can't get enough
It's their job you see
to protect their people and stuff.
They may make you crazy.
They will make you laugh
The Hounds of Awesomeness
Sure are a gas.
The ever awesome...

Dachshunds got the snow storm blues

Well if anyone has noticed, it's been snowing, a lot lately. I don't know about you, but we have between 2 and three feet on the ground. That doesn't include the horrendous piles made by shoveling and the snow plows. We're all like a bunch of rats in a big snow maze. So naturally the dachshunds being short in stature have it particularly difficult. They wanted to go out the other morning, and I was really tempted to just let them go because I knew it would be amusing when they took that first step and disappeared into the snow. But I would have to go save them and they would be all snow bound and that would be a mess. So I told them to wait while I went out and dug them some channels to get around the yard through. They seem to enjoy the little habitrails, each corner is a new adventure.
Not all dug out yet
So the doggies are doing a lot of laying low. They are good at that, plus being small dogs they utilize the space of the house to get exercise inside when the weather prevents spending much time outside.

Ode to the Hunting Dog

Chipmunk's you must beware
for the dachshund's, they are here
by the window they do stare
while you might think
you haven't a care
but to have their way
you won't be spared
When you come out to feed
and in all your greed
packing your cheeks
with all the bird seed.
Then the alarm does sound
someone's released the hounds
out in the yard, they do bound
Scurry and scatter
mad as a hatter
dachshunds on a mission
That's the matter
But with speed on your side
your chance to hide
into the stonewall you did slide
for tomorrow's another day
as the dachshund's say
just be sure you don't
get in our way

You Just Have to Have a Wiener Dog Slicer

Gosh, I didn't know that I needed one of these, but there it is, the ultimate hot dog slicer. Since I am in to all things dachshund I may just have to get one. It beckons me even though my kids are all grown up and I really only EAT hot dogs rarely. If I did have a hankering for a dog I would just consume it via a bun. But when you are a borderline crazy dachshund lady, having three of the little buggers as your constant companions you find yourself tempted by these things. Then I will have to dust it, or stash it away in case I have grandchildren, or keep it until it a novelty collectors item.
If you slice up hot dogs for us we will eat them.

Miss Peaches ponders a new Doo

My sweet wire haired dachshund Miss Peaches. Comes this time of year and we have to contemplate the shaving of the dog. The first cut of the season is the toughest, but she has the patience of an angel, although trimming around the butt is not really her favorite part. When we're through she's a new dog and she's much happier on those warm days. Since we went to Florida in April the shearing of the hound came early. I ventured to do it in the bathroom figuring I would just bring the shop vac in afterwards. I think she gets curlier every year, my husband says that's because I cut her fur. I'm not sure that's the way with dogs, but it's kinda like having 2 different dogs, Curly Boo and Lamby Sue. There both awesome to me.

Rango Project Winding Down

Rango, Spaatz and Foozy
The Rango Project shall be coming to a close soon. If you saw previous stories you know the SPCA asked us to take on a dachshund they had who was a problem. They called him Rambo because he tried to bite several people and some couldn't get near him. We call him Rango, I'm happy to say that he has been transformed into a big mush that just wants to be loved. He was just real scared in that place. His biggest problem now are his manners, he will climb over the top of the other dogs so he can be close to me. Miss Peaches doesn't appreciate this as she is top dog. He will even ring the doggie bell to go out when he needs to.
He was listed in the local paper over the weekend and some people came to see him. They are people who had a long hair dachshund for many years. I am so glad that some dachshundists will be taking him. He will do well, he really is a good boy and there, he will get ALL the love, which will make him happy. The End.

The RANGO Project

Rango, long haired dachshund, close to standard size
The SPCA called us to see if we would foster a dachshund they had there for a while. They called him Rambo because he was mean and tried to bite many people. We checked him out. I figured he was just terrified. In this small room in a cage, about 10 other dogs barking constantly. We brought him home, I figured we'd call him Rango, you know, stranger in a strange place. At first he was so scared. Hiding under the dining room table, peed himself. I was shocked that within 2 hours he started to transform. He remembered his inner dachshund, running around, tail wagging, playing. It hasn't been a total miracle, he has some issues, food aggression, possessiveness. Trying to work through those things now. Oh yeah, he's a trash hound. I am struck by how we've been able to improve his life in a night and day fashion and he has responded quicker than I could have expected. We're trying and he's trying too and hopefully he'll get a furever home someday, he can be real sweet, he just needs the right people to give him a chance.

Bring out the Hounds

The hounds of course are dachshunds, which were originally bred to be hunting dogs. Let me assure you, inside the dachshund, the heart of the hunter still beats. My three doxsons dispatched their first squirrel on Friday. There was good fun to be had by all. We have an abundance of the "tree rats" here, our property being lined with black walnut trees. That doesn't keep the varmints from getting a free handout at my bird feeders. That's when we bring out the hounds. After chasing Mr Squirrel about the yard he managed to squeak himself into a hole int the back of our "garage". It is 70 some years old, holds no cars, basically a big tool shed. Unfortunately for the squirrel the hole was big enough for mini dachshunds too. I could hear shovels and brooms being knocked about inside so I went around and opened the door to witness Miss Peaches and Spaatz pinning the squirrel to the ground. He managed to escape briefly to run under the tool bench, Peaches in hot pursuit. Spaatz ran outside to see if he could access the squirrel from the other side of the wall, I think that Fooze just bailed at this point, he likes the chase, but I don't think he's got his "death shake" down. The sounds I heard next were kind of indescribable and I knew Miss Peaches was dispatching the squirrel. She walked out from under the bench and dropped the squirrel, x's in his eyes. For her the fun was over, Mr squirrel wasn't going to play anymore, time to move on. So I removed the body, and gave all the dogs a good bath. Figured its always good to have a bath after you killed somebody in the garage.
All washed up, ready to do it again

GOT DACHSHUNDS??

My three dachshunds sure do like a little milk. Actually, they really like anything that might be remotely related to food or anything that might be construed as edible. As one might imagine this can almost be without limitation. Lettuce, has been one of those things not worth consuming. Some other raw vegetables are not really popular, but they will eat them just so the other dogs can't have it. In the brief video you will observe the morning routine of finishing the milk from my cereal bowl. This will play out exactly the same everyday. They all jam their noses in simultaneously, lap like crazy, then Peaches the wire hair will finish first, followed by Foozie and then Spaatz will meticulously make sure that not a molecule will be left behind. He always likes to be thorough.

Did someone say "Doglets"??

DOGLETS?
Doglets you see, are what my sister calls the dogs whenever she visits. It struck me as kind of amusing and appropriate for mini dachshunds. They are all dog for sure, sometimes with even more attitude than big dogs. They don't have the luxury of size so they have to back up their small stature with feistiness. Pictured are my three doxsons of course, and two of my daughters hounds, the more the merrier.

Let me 'at 'em

3 Dachshunds make roadtrip

Foozie, Spaatz and Miss Peaches came through the eight hour drive to Maine with flying colors. I made the backseat of the truck as comfy as possible. While Peaches was pretty well behaved Spaatz and Fooze tried to sneak up to the front seat what seemed like 100 times. I usually would give them a kiss and tell them to go back. When we were getting close to the campground I let in and let them come up. Even though try as they might they couldn't quite get all three of them comfortable on my lap they didn't want to go back to the backseat. Golly I feel loved.

Adventures of the Bunnyman

Bunnyman
Spaatz lives to chase the bunnies. Peaches does too, but she lets Spaatz take the lead. Foozie, if someone else finds the bunny then okay, but he's not going stalking himself. Yesterday we had a crazy little escapade I wish I had been recording it. There are a row of trees right out the backdoor, some have quite the thicket of grape vines around the bottom. Home for birds, bunnies and the occasional chipmunk. Well the bunny was sitting to the right side of the tree, the dogs go out, bunny runs into the vine cave leaving Peach and Fooze standing there as Spaatz goes around the other side, hear a little rustling. Next thing I know the bunny comes out of the bush like he was shot out of a cannon. Right in front of Peach and Fooze, they're so surprised they don't react in time as the bunny takes off and Spaatz is now out and on his tail. Peach and Fooze try to keep up as Spaatz disappears for awhile. Alas he comes up empty pawed again, tomorrow is another day.

100% Loyal and True

PeachyPoo, Foozie-B, Spaatzen
You know what I love about these guys? They are 100%, I know what to expect from them and they never let me down. They make me laugh everyday, and give all the love and affection I can stand. You know what I mean, sometimes you have to say enough with the kisses already. In return they ask for so little, cup o'chow and I enjoy patting them almost as much as they enjoy being patted. I don't know whose getting the best deal, but it seems like we're all winners together.

Don't Forget Peaches

Spaatz, Boo-cakes and Foober
I know that the boys have been in the forefront of the latest posts, but we can't forget about the Peach, aka currently as Boo-cakes. She has long been called Boo boo,but lately its been Boo-cakes. I'd like to have a dollar for every nickname these dogs have, I could probably buy dinner anyway. This is an older photo of them sunning themselves. Peach has her curly coat. I actually shaved her up for the third time this summer yesterday. It's been so hot, I wanted to help her keep cool. Nothing too good for the puppies.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!!

Spaatz, Miss Peaches and Foozeball
Happy 4th of July everyone from the My Three Doxson's. We hope everyone has the appropriate amount of fun and a little fireworks of course. Doesn't Spaatz look like a general? And well he should, he's named after a 4 star general. Miss Peachy is as beautiful as ever and well Fooze, he's named after a table game with a little ball that zings around willy-nilly. Have a happy holiday and be safe.

Unlikely Partners in Crime

Spaatzen and Miss Peaches

I'm not quite sure I totally understand the dynamics of their relationship. Peach on the one hand is the oldest, the alpha female, she does try to maintain her position. Spaatz is the youngster who is always giving her a hard time, but she's very patient with him and only occasionally does she really feel the need to let him know who's boss. Yet, that said she follows him into the yard after the squirrels and other woodland creatures like he's got an edge to this hunting thing.. They do a lot of sparring, which she enjoys, but sometimes wishes he would just go away. Over the weekend I gave Peachy her second shave of the warm season. It keeps her cooler and makes the ticks easire to see. I decided to do it in the bathroom, sitting on the floor with her. She is quite coopertive, but Spaatz wanted to be right there while I was doing it. Foozy our 3rd dachshund wanted no part of this activity and was hiding. Spaatz seemed to be concerned about his "girlfriend" and layed right next to her during the whole process. It seemed kinda sweet. He is sweet but a little dopey. Its a May December thing, but whose in charge keeps changing.

Happy St Patrick's Dogs!!

Its a little early I know, but you know you can't put any holiday off to the last minute. It all takes planning, some holidays more than others. Ya gotta hit the dollar store. Atleast to pick up your silly items to dress the Dachshunds in holiday attire. They don't mind too much, there are treats involved of course, little ones because its going to take more than one, especially with three dogs. Although Peaches likes "dress-up", head gear is not her favorite thing. Everyone decided to take this photo shoot laying down.
I hope everyone has a pleasant St. Patrick's day, not too pleasant though. You know it originally wasn't supposed to be a drinking holiday? In fact in Ireland its taken more seriously than people in the US do. That's what they said on NPR. I'm sure they have a few beers too. It actually commemorates the death of St. Patrick in 461. He is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland even though they kidnapped him and brought him to Ireland as a slave. He escaped, then went back, what a guy! And now they remember him forever.

Don't Hate me because I'm Beautiful

Miss Dirty Feet Again by batterie61
Miss Dirty Feet Again, a photo by batterie61 on Flickr   Ahh, Miss Peachy, she has quite the pose going on here, all she REALLY wants is her tummy rubbed. Unfortunately for her she is about to get a bath because she has been out trouncing around in the mud in the backyard. I know we have had very little snow this winter, but we have had plenty of rain starting before the hurricanes that hit the northeast last fall. She just manages to find it or look for it. On our walk this morning she explored a drainpipe that needed a quick run through. My theory is its a wirehair thing. My old wirehair was the same way, but my two smoothies are not. Fooze in particular will tippy toe around the puddles while Peach cruises through. I might as well stay used to it, I aim to find another wirehair. This can be a tall order, but on I aim to fill.

Enjoying the sun together

I just love wirehair Dachshunds, because Watson is always in my heart. I know we will get another wirehair someday, they have a special temperment. I am sharing this awesome photo by Ester Hooff from Flickr where all my Dachshund photos are. Happy Daylight Savings Time! Check your clocks.

**Dachshund Art**

I am happy to share this bit of Dachshund art. I am particularly proud of my mailbox which is a mosaic glass on metal. I'm working on a "life size" Dachshund in broken china which I'll post when its finished.
