Thought I Lost my Peach

My sweet Peaches, I will confess, she is my favorite. I love the boys dearly, but she is my girl. The other day we experienced that awful feeling when your dog is lost. Its the worst. We went out for our morning walk, and we went down the street to "the farm" owned by friends where we always let the dogs off leash. We've done this 100 times at least. They love to run around and sniff. We walk down this wide path with all kinds of equipment that the owners collect along it and come out in the hayfield that had been cut but not bailed. Then we get to where the grass is as we say "higher than a dachshunds back". There's a little pond where there is usually some Canadian geese. It is wooded to the one side. Well we're walking along with all the dogs, then Peach wasn't there. We called her expecting her to pop out of the grass. We always keep tabs on where they are on this walk, keeping everyone together. It was as if aliens abducted her from out of the sky. One second she was there, then she wasn't. We called and called, searched all around the pond, the grasses, the adjoining woods. My legs were scratched terribly by the pricker bushes. I thought she is caught on something by her harness or she went down a woodchuck hole and can't get herself out. We called and searched for over an hour. Now mind you Peachy is a lowrider and a bit "stocky", she doesn't move that fast. Not like Spaatz the dachshund rocket. I was very upset, it just didn't make sense. My husband, who is the dog warden, not used to being on this side of the lost dog equation decided to go back to the house. He was hoping somehow she would be there. Sure enough as he came around the house there she was sitting on the front step. He zoomed back to where I was still searching in the car, called that he had found her. Our house is about a quarter mile away on the other side of the road, for her to make it on her own safely amazes me. All we can figure is that she caught the scent or went after a critter and went into the woods, wasn't sure the direction we were calling from and decided that she would be better off to go home and wait for us. She's not just beautiful, but smart too.
The gang's all here!!

You Just Have to Have a Wiener Dog Slicer

Gosh, I didn't know that I needed one of these, but there it is, the ultimate hot dog slicer. Since I am in to all things dachshund I may just have to get one. It beckons me even though my kids are all grown up and I really only EAT hot dogs rarely. If I did have a hankering for a dog I would just consume it via a bun. But when you are a borderline crazy dachshund lady, having three of the little buggers as your constant companions you find yourself tempted by these things. Then I will have to dust it, or stash it away in case I have grandchildren, or keep it until it a novelty collectors item.
If you slice up hot dogs for us we will eat them.

Foozie and The Cone of Shame

Good 'ole Foozie B. Its been established that he is neurotic about licking. That's why he wears a shirt all the time. He will lick his armpits until they are completely devoid of fur. Well, recently he got a boo boo on his toe and he decided to lick it so it would be an even bigger boo boo. So naturally we cleaned it up and wrapped it so it would get better. Foozie decided that he would lick his foot above the bandage so now he has two boo boo's. Enter the Cone of Shame. Couldn't just leave it alone could ya? I feel bad, because he's obviously not happy, but in a way one can't help but laugh because he looks funny. Then you feel bad again, because your finding humor in his discomfort. We are hoping we can get him to heal up enough so he doesn't have to wear the Cone of Shame for the rest of his life.

Miss Peaches ponders a new Doo

My sweet wire haired dachshund Miss Peaches. Comes this time of year and we have to contemplate the shaving of the dog. The first cut of the season is the toughest, but she has the patience of an angel, although trimming around the butt is not really her favorite part. When we're through she's a new dog and she's much happier on those warm days. Since we went to Florida in April the shearing of the hound came early. I ventured to do it in the bathroom figuring I would just bring the shop vac in afterwards. I think she gets curlier every year, my husband says that's because I cut her fur. I'm not sure that's the way with dogs, but it's kinda like having 2 different dogs, Curly Boo and Lamby Sue. There both awesome to me.

Dachshunds on Vacation

We are actually back from Florida, but we all had a good time. Especially the dogs. Not only is there a fenced in yard with a pool that they can romp around endlessly chasing lizards, but a quiet neighborhood we can take then for a walk along with my daughters dachshunds. Built in friends to play with. They weren't to sure about the pool, but I assure you everyone got wet. How could we leave them home when we know they're going to have a great time too. I am happy to say that they travel well, ready to go for another 1000 miles anytime.
This bed is just right Mom

You Talkin to me?

Miss Peaches doesn't look real impressed. Little does she know that in a couple of days when we say "do you want to go for a ride?" its gonna be a thousand miles. Oh and I'm gonna have to give her, her summer shave before we go because its gonna be warm where we're going. Usually when its a long trip they're a little anxious at first because they think we're going to the park or the rail trail for a walk. Then after a while they'll settle in because we don't seem to be stopping anywhere soon. So it will be time for a group nap in the back seat. We haven't got one yet, but we talked about one of those screens that keeps them in the backseat. They will be constantly trying to sneak up in the front and sit in my lap. They do it real slow so maybe no one will notice. Then it gets tough because you've got three dogs that want to sit in your lap. In a Subaru its impossible. May be in an older vehicle with a bench seat it might be possible. They will try real hard to make it work, then someone moves a little and the whole configuration of dachshund bodies falls apart and then its "go in the back". It will be along ride, but we do it so they can be with us. We will see my daughter's dachshunds and it will be a dachshund party.

Dachshund Tries to Attack the Moon

Good ole Spaatz, not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I gotta give him credit for trying. Last night I was letting the dogs out the back door, which lets out into a big open field. It's mowed short close to the house, then eventually it gets into taller grass then woods. Well he leads the charge, all three flat out running, barking, I can almost here a bugle playing. I then realize what they're going for. It's not a varmint of any sort. It's the Moon. It's this giant glowing saucer just appearing over the horizon. One thing dachshunds don't like is things that are out of place. That moon is not there all the time so it was deemed a threat to the homestead and treated accordingly. They got way out there until the grass was getting too tall for dachshunds to pass through easily. At that point he decided he had bitten off more than he could chew and Spaatz called the patrol off. Figured there was plenty to sniff on the way back, it would be several minutes before they mosyed back to the house.
